The future is in small high intensity sustainable farms managed primarily by manual labor. There's really no other answer that I can see.

I write about it at length here, but I think the most likely shape of food to come is that for some time yet we'll still see industrialised fossil fuel-using agriculture for basic grains, but lots more small farms and allotments in cities.
